The only aspect of note with this incident is how Europcar threw ChatGPT under the bus as the source of the fake data. Various media outlets ran with this narative and have made no effort to verify it.
Here’s an example of a headline from TechCrunch “Europcar says someone likely used ChatGPT to promote a fake data breach”, that happily parrots the companies PR
and another from cybernews “Europcar dismisses data leak claims as AI fake”
This is despite the fact, that others have pointed out the data was made by Faker.
The ChatGPT narrative works well for Europcar though, as it’s a popular boogieman at the moment. It takes the focus off them as everyone starts screaming about the evils of AI.
